The Ghost of Yōtei: PS5 Revives Blockbuster Releases

PlayStation supporters and opponents rarely agree.

However one particular grievance which has been expressed by both sides.

"Where are all the games?"

High-cost, solo hits from internal studios have long been the key to Sony's console dominance.

Throughout the PlayStation 4 era, players had a consistent flow of story-rich experiences, but this has felt more like a slow drip since last year's Spider-Man 2.

However, Sony's newest game – Ghost of Yōtei – marks a reversion to its successful premium style.

What Took So Long?

The studio's latest project is a follow-up to 2020's feudal Japan-set adventure Ghost of Tsushima, among the last big console-exclusive titles from Sony.

"Video games do take a significant period to make, so it's an enormous chunk of your career," notes Nate.

Ghost of Yōtei moves the story a several hundred miles north, to the Honshū area, and the setting a few hundred years later, to 1603.

This time, the story revolves around the protagonist Atsu, a female warrior on a mission to exact retribution against the Yōtei Six – a band of warlords accountable for her family's demise.

With a prior title to expand upon, it's not a brand new beginning but, Fox states, the undertaking is still a huge effort.

Simply introducing a different main character, for instance, demands input from writers, character animators and character designers, to cite a handful of the jobs participating.

Internally there are many, many more contributors.

A Massive Crew Project

Even though the studio has roughly 200 staff at its studio near Washington, many hundreds contribute to its titles.

The credits for Ghost of Tsushima, for instance, contained approximately eighteen hundred individuals.

Several of them were from overseas, or from external firms that excel in specific specialized fields.

"Developing a title requires a wide range of different abilities, from highly technical people... to those who are highly driven by narrative, like our writers," explains Nate.

"Furthermore the various departments operate in harmony. It's like directing an orchestra.

"One must have each elements working in unison."

Nate says that a dizzying variety of elements can go into a single moment – from soundtrack to the software that causes leaves blow across the environment at a crucial moment.

"Each group need to have a awareness of the end goal," says Nate.

An Adjustment in Strategy

Strategic vision is something the community have questioned Sony of lacking in recent years.

During its former leader, Jim Ryan, the company began production on 12 multiplayer titles, called "ongoing" games in the business.

A few of the top titles, such as Fortnite, the sandbox platform and the military shooter, keep users engaged for months and produce substantial amounts of income.

The company has had a hit in the area with the previous year's Helldivers II, but an disastrous failure with another game, which was shut down just a fortnight after its debut.

The company has subsequently cancelled multiplayer projects using some of its biggest franchises, including God of War and The Last of Us.

Pursuing the multiplayer arena is a plan PlayStation has admitted is not entirely "going smoothly", but it's explained some games with online features, such as Gran Turismo and sports simulation MLB: The Show, have performed well.

The stars of its recent marketing event were a new title, a sequel to 2021's Returnal, and the long-awaited Wolverine adventure from superhero studio Insomniac – each solo games.

Debate and Scrutiny

High-profile titles can frequently be magnets for conflict, as the studio not long ago found when a developer's comment about the death of political US figure a public figure caused a outcry.

The studio ultimately let go the employee at the center, and founder a senior figure commented that "applauding or trivializing an individual's killing is a deal-breaker for us", when questioned about it.

Some political video game personalities have also targeted Ghost of Yōtei for starring a heroine.

Fox says it was an "unconventional decision", but key to the narrative the developers set out to present of an unlikely hero challenging traditional conventions.

As the game progresses, Atsu's myth as an Onryō – a revenge-seeking apparition seen in Eastern folklore – grows.

"Players assume it can't be a female would have taken out individuals of the the group without she is a otherworldly {creature|
